The city itself is a mix that catches people out. There are Victorians and turn-of-the-century homes in Napa Abajo and around Fuller Park, post-war and mid-century tracts through Alta Heights and Browns Valley, tile-roofed subdivisions from the 1980s and 1990s, and increasingly modern architecture out toward Silverado and Coombsville where flat and metal roofs are the norm.

Heat is the first factor. Napa summers run considerably hotter than anywhere on the coastal side of the North Bay, and sustained heat is hard on roofs — it ages composition shingle from above, dries out plumbing vent boots until they split, and cooks poorly ventilated attics.
