Not every roof problem is a new roof. Rea Roofing Inc. repairs roofs across the North Bay, and a great many roof problems turn out to be a small, fixable failure in the wrong place — a cracked pipe boot, a wall flashing that was never counter-flashed, a valley packed with oak and redwood debris, or a ridge that lifted in a winter storm off the coast.
The repairs these roofs need most
The point of a repair is to find the cause. Water rarely enters where it appears inside, so we trace it from the stain back up the slope, check the obvious suspects in order, and repair the thing that is actually letting water in — instead of caulking the nearest visible crack and calling it done.
Flashing is the number one culprit. Wall and chimney terminations, skylight curbs, dead valleys behind dormers and the transitions where a steep roof meets a flat section are where sealant was used as a substitute for metal, and sealant has a much shorter life than the roof around it.
Penetrations come second. Plumbing vent boots go brittle and split in North Bay summer sun, and the split is usually on the uphill side where you cannot see it from the ground. Solar mounts, satellite feet and old antenna anchors leave holes that were never properly flashed.
Then there is weather and debris. Winter storms lift and crack shingles and shift tile; the dry months load valleys and gutters with needles, leaves and moss, especially under the heavy tree canopy in west Sonoma County and along the Russian River. Both are straightforward to correct once someone is actually up there looking.

Should I repair or replace?
It comes down to the age of the covering, how widespread the failure is and the condition of the deck. An isolated flashing failure on a ten-year-old roof is a repair. Granule loss and brittle shingles across the whole south slope is a replacement, and patching it just delays the same conversation.
Can you repair a roof another contractor installed?
Yes. We repair roofs regardless of who installed them. If the roof is still under someone else's workmanship warranty we will tell you, so you can use it before spending your own money.
