Standing seam, done properly
Metal has become the default premium choice in wine country for reasons that are practical rather than fashionable. A properly built metal assembly can achieve a Class A fire rating, which matters enormously in the wildland-urban interface zones that cover much of the hills in all four counties. It sheds heavy winter rain without relying on hundreds of small overlaps. And it is one of the few roofs that genuinely outlasts the mortgage.
The difference between a metal roof that lasts and one that fails early is almost entirely in the details. Standing seam panels expand and contract with temperature — a long panel on a Sonoma hillside moves measurably between a January morning and an August afternoon — so panels must be fastened with clips that let them move, not screwed flat through the face. Exposed-fastener panels have their place on outbuildings and barns, but on a house the gaskets under those screws are a maintenance item forever.
We build the substrate to match: solid deck, high-temperature underlayment rated for the heat that builds under metal, and slip sheet or separation where the panel calls for it. Ridge, hip, eave, rake, valley and every wall termination get formed metal, hemmed and cleated so nothing depends on sealant.
Panel profile and finish get chosen for the building, not from a single sample chip. Rib height and panel width change how a long roof plane reads from the driveway; a darker finish suits a dark-bodied modern home while a terracotta or bronze reads correctly on a wine-country property. Panels are set with concealed clips that allow thermal movement, seamed and locked, with formed metal at every edge, valley and wall.

Trim, closures and final detail
Ridge and hip caps, eave and rake trim, closures and any snow or debris detailing, then a full walk of every seam and termination.

Is a metal roof noisy in the rain?
Not in the way people expect. The drumming sound comes from metal over open framing, like a barn or a patio cover. Over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic below, a standing seam roof is no louder inside than composition shingle.
Is metal roofing fire-rated?
Metal roof assemblies can achieve a Class A fire rating, which is the highest classification and what California's wildland-urban interface requirements are built around. The rating belongs to the whole assembly — panel, underlayment and deck together — so it is specified as a system on the estimate.
Can metal go on a low-slope roof?
Some standing seam profiles are rated for low slopes and some are not, and using the wrong one is a guaranteed leak. On the many North Bay homes with a steep main roof and a flat section behind it, we often run metal on the pitch and a membrane on the low-slope area, detailed properly at the transition.
